The award-winning Pennsylvania State Police Philadelphia Headquarters caught the attention of Building Enclosure magazine. BKP designed the facility with a creative steel and glass curtain wall facade system. The layered exterior gives the building a sense of transparency while still maintaining strict security and solidity requirements. “Obscured Solidity: Blending Security, Transparency into High-Performing Facility” by Amanda Weko covers the team effort that led the building’s design. Earlier this year, the Construction Management Association of America Mid-Atlantic Chapter honored the headquarters as its 2017 Sustainable Project of the Year.
The General Building Contractors Association (GBCA) makes its home in a 1961 former bank building on 18th Street in Philadelphia. BKP was engaged by GBCA to perform a variety of building upgrades, including redesign of the aging and deteriorated facade. Completed earlier this year, the curtain wall replacement lends transparency and improved street presence to the building. The glazing community has taken notice of BKP’s design concept and execution by Eureka Metal & Glass Services, Inc. The Architectural Glass Institute, Philadelphia’s labor-management organization representing union glaziers and glazing contractors, featured the project in a recent case study, which was picked up by glass news website, GlassOnWeb.com.
The LaB, a new late-night entertainment venue at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., has been awarded a Silver Citation in the 2017 American School & University Magazine Educational Interiors Showcase. “Great use of an existing space that connects the old with the new,” said the 2017 jury. The BKP project is one of 12 that earned the highest citation level of recognition in the annual awards program. The project is featured in the August edition of American School & University Magazine.
BKP’s design for the Wildwood Crest Branch of the Cape May County Library System appears as a featured Design Profile in the Summer 2017 edition of CONTEXT, the journal of AIA Philadelphia. The issue looks at transformative civic spaces making an impact on communities and the design firms responsible for their creation. Wildwood Crest Branch Library brings two distinct community populations – 4,000 year-round residents and a swell of up to 250,000 summer vacationers – together through architecture that feels both intimate and spacious, while offering programmatic flexibility.
The Pennsylvania State Police Headquarters in Philadelphia earned a Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter 2017 Project of the Year Award. The CMAA Project Achievement Awards honor those projects constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region that represent creativity and innovation through construction and program management. The Pa. State Police Headquarters earned recognition as a sustainable project.
One of Pennsylvania’s largest and most-respected women-owned professional construction management firms, JBC Associates, Inc., provided construction management on the project. BKP and JBC collaborated on the award application, describing how security features and sustainability were woven into the project’s design and construction, and how the new facility maximizes troop efficiency.
